Tramlines: 22/07/12

We’re delighted to be curating the stage at the Redhouse this Sunday as part of Sheffield’s FREE Tramlines festival. We have invited a whole bunch of ace bands to come play this. Also, as our stage is inside, you don’t even need to worry about the horrible weather!

Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement
Hull’s finest will be bringing us their unique brand of Velvet Underground inspired spaghetti western indiepop.

The Sweet Nothings
Peace, love, pop thrills and international socialism from popular Sheffield beat combo.

MJ Hibbett and the Validators
Indie pop hero and House VS Home favourite Hibbett finally brings his trusted Validators back to the Steel City. Expect songs about dinosaurs, politics and the trams of Sheffield!

August Actually
Nottingham folk-pop outfit will be capturing hearts and blowing minds with songs of love and the supernatural.

Nottingham’s lo-fi stalwarts make a triumphant return to the stage with their thoughtful, Sparklehorse-esque pop melodies.

Nordenfelt are influenced by Sunn 0))), NWA, and Squarepusher, yet they still end up sounding like Elliott Smith.

Fall Forwards
A brand new band comprised of former Japanese Sleeper Andy Hirst, former Situationists Dan and Ralph, and a lovely bass player called Matt. They play brooding pop with the lightest of electronica and math touches.

Aqualassie and the Sky Pumas
An insane spectacle of collective homicide, from the heart of the Sussex Downs. Expect noise, brevity, affection for Stan Lee, and one guitar solo.

Vom Vorton
Acoustic storytelling loveliness from former Lardpony frontman, recently achieving internet fame with a song about the Anfield cat. Expect songs about cats and robots.

The Mini Skips
Gentle folky smiley indiepop from Sheffield.

House vs Home Singles Club No. 1: Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement

So, the launch of the Singles Club is upon us and we shall be beginning with Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement’s The Singer Inside us All/The Gift.

The Singer Inside us All is a nod to the indie pop roots of their former incarnation The Rocky Nest, while The Gift is a total reworking of the song of the same name by their greatest influence The Velvet Underground. The accompanying artwork is by our very own Alexander Christopher Hale.

The tracks are available as a ‘name your price’ download from the Shop & Audio page on here, or from

Introducing…Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement

Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement, or HotMIM as they are more frequently referred to, have been peddling their unique brand of spaghetti western lo-fi pop since early 2011. Hailing from Hull, HotMIM feature former members of Fonda 500, The Rocky Nest and Dead Sea Diver. They went down a storm playing the church stage at 2011’s Indietracks Festival: “Ennio Morricone fed on a diet of early Belle & Sebastian EPs” (; they “endlessly flirt with comedy and chaos to produce a memorable afternoon of musical merriment” (SoundsXP). Since then, they have achieved acclaim with their Signal Box EP getting into the Pop-O-Matic Albums of the year.

HotMIM are Paul Sarel (guitar and vocals), Tom Nash (bass), Chris Norrison (drums) and recent addition Julian Nielsen (guitar and keyboards). They draw from influences such as The Velvet Underground, and have been recording in bedrooms, hallways and farm buldings with ex Salako (Jeepster) and Bitmap man Mr Luke Barwell.

The first release by HotMIM on House VS Home Records will be their contribution to the Singles Club when it is launched on 1st February 2012. Stay tuned for more information about this.

In the meantime, you can like them on facebook for updates.

House vs Home Singles Club

From 1st February 2012, House VS Home will be launching a monthly singles club. The idea behind this is to put out some tracks by bands that we love and hopefully open them up to different audiences. Each month there will be two tracks from that month’s chosen band to download, along with artwork by specially chosen illustrators and designers.

The House vs Home singles club will be launched with the release of label signings Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement‘s The Singer Inside Us All/The Gift.

We have plenty of exciting artists lined up for the singles club so stay tuned!

House VS Home is a brand new DIY record label based in Nottingham. We plan to release CDs, records and MP3s by indiepop bands who aren’t “typical” indiepop, and have been hosting gigs in Nottingham since March 2010. At present, HvH’s roster consists of August Actually (Nottingham) and Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement (Hull).
The House VS Home label shall be launched with the release of August Actually’s debut EP, Songs from the Lighthouse – available from our online shop as of Saturday 5th November. We will be hosting a gig to coincide with this release on 5th November at the Chameleon Arts Cafe in Nottingham, featuring MJ Hibbett & the Validators, August Actually, Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement and Burly Nagasaki.
